    cichlids
    N i k k i . asked:

Hi, my mom is giving away her 50 gallon fish tank to a friend and there are 2 yellow cichlids left in the tank, the rest of the fish died =(. I have a 5 gallon fish tank in my room and my platy and tiger barb occupy the tank. I was wondering if my mom can transfer her 2 yellow cichlids into my tank to live with my 2 fish. Do you think they will fight each other or the cichlids will eat my little fish? Please help! Thank you.

If you have some rocks in the tank for the fish to give some shelter, it could work.

i would have to say no! here’s why

there are two kinda chiclids you might have one a gold severum(south american chiclid) or an yellow african chiclid( from the rivers of africa). but when you say yellow it sounds like you have a couple of africans wich will eat your platty and chase the barbs till the eat them or wear them out.

my advice pick wich you would rather have and give the other to a pet store or friend for a humain answer to your problem

I say no, ciclids are very aggressive. Cichlids like to gang up on other fish and will eventually killa nd eat your fish. Plus a 5 gallon tank is too small for that many fish. Stick to what you have in your tank and try to find a home for the cichlids. Good luck!

not very well. Tiger barbs and platies are community fish and pretty laid back. Cichlids are mean….especially ones from Africa such as your yellow ones. I had cichlid that killed every fish we tried to put with it. I would buy a 10 gallon tank and put it in that. It’s a shame that such beautiful fishes are such bastards.

    Ok here are your problems:
    - a 5 gallon is WAY too small for cichlids of any kind, you should have at least 50 gallons or more

    - yes, your fish will be the cichlid’s snack if you move them in there

    No.

    1. a 5 gallon is too small for these cichlids
    2. without knowing exactly what they are, could they be yellow labs? either way they’d see your other fish as a target for their aggression.
    3. they have different water requirements
    4. a platy can just about live in a 5 gallon, but a tiger barb can call it even with a cichlids aggression and should be kept in a minimum of a 30 US gallon tank in a group of 6 or more with fast moving short-finned tankmates. tiger barbs are notorious fin nippers.

yes if the platy’s are big no problem to keep them with the cichlids and tiger barb is strong enough
