    cichlids
    tricky asked:

I have 4 different malawi cichlids that have either eggs or fry in their mouths, How do I know how far along they are, or how do I know when they will spit the fry out? I guess I have a very healthy tank as they all seem to be breeding or showing mating rituals.
    species are:- Yellow Lab
    Zebra Red Top
    Peacock
    Hongi

I think it’s just a waiting game. Check around some cichlid websites and see if you can find info on gestation times. Good luck!

I would think it’ll vary by species. If you want to post which species you have I’ll be happy to look them up for you or Sir Ghapy, fivespeed or 8 in the Corner probably know right off the top of thier head. Ash is pretty darn good as well if you can find her. I don’t know all the breeding times, so if you give me the species, I’ll find it for you.

Follow up, 25-30 days on Yellow Labs

    21-25 days on Red Zebras

    18-28 days on Hongi

Not sure what you mean by peacock. If you have a specfic one, I’ll look for that too

The only sure way to know is to catch them when they first start holding – then you know that the holding period of the typical malawi is 28 days (though for some species it can be as short as 21 days).

The further along they are, the more swelled their throat will be. Just before they are ready to spit, the fry are hatched and the egg sacs gone, and the fry active – the female will often seem to have a more difficult time keeping their mouth closed. Sometimes you can even catch a glimpse of the little fry in her mouth.

I don’t mean to burst your bubble, but these fish will virtually breed in a toilet, so don’t rely on this as indication to quality – your diligent aquarium care routine and proper setup for the fish you have will take care of that part.
